BISTURI - "S/T" discography compilation CD (2022)

From Spain comes brutal old school grinders BISTURI! This compilation brings together everything released so far, from 2016-2022, covering all their standalone releases, splits and a live set.

The CD is packed with 61 stabs of straight up, zero bullshit, metal-free GRINDCORE rooted in WARSORE, 80s NAPALM DEATH, AGATHOCLES' best and old ANAL CUNT, with the odd part sounding a bit like EXCRUCIATING TERROR. A great local comparison would be Newcastle drongos BODY MELT. Shitloads of flat-knacker straight-arm struggle blasts, neck-snapping tempo changes, blink-and-ya-miss-it grooves, alternating and parallel high shrieks/low growls (easy to fuck up and make sound lame, not the case here!) and only a few dumb mincey oompas make for one hell of a belting disc. I feel that this type of rough as guts grind is actually really hard to find well-executed, as in theory it's pretty easy - throw some blasts, d-beats and breaks together and you have a band, right...? Well, these guys clearly understand what makes old school grind the most rage-inducing shit around, as there are lots of little deceptively clever songwriting twists and turns that keep you hooked for almost the entire runtime of 75 minutes(!), which is incredibly difficult to achieve for anyone in this style. Even the half-time ride cymbal blasts sound sick when used, another thing I'd usually bitch and moan about. The best material is mostly placed on the first half of the disc, but across the board, there's little to fault here - not just a compilation that you skip to the decent 10-15 minutes of, by any means. It helps that the recording quality isn't complete dogshit as is often the case for similar bands - it's rough, dirty and grimy, but clear enough so that everything's legible. Even the 22min live set at the end doesn't sound too bad; I've heard a lot worse. This one was stuck in my car stereo for weeks when I first copped it from RADICAL BLARGHST distro last year, who at the time of writing, still appears to have copies in stock, so any Aussies reading this should get on it right now! BISTURI will have you getting drunk as shit, stumble-moshing and double-fist pumping around your lounge room. 8/10 and for me, a highlight in recent years' REAL GRIND.
